landscaping tips

Hummingbirds are attracted to red
Plant shrubs such as Weigela, Lilac, Azalea, Rhododendron and Honeysuckle in your garden and then hang a fuchsia plant near a window to draw them in. Fill a feeder with 1 part sugar and 4 parts water and nothing else.
Add a rain garden to your landscape
A rain garden is a depressions designed to capture, temporarily hold, and then soak up storm water runoff from your roof or other impervious areas around your home. In addition to adding beauty and attracting wildlife, rain gardens can also help protect water quality. Storm water runoff is one of the main sources of water pollution nation-wide.
Extend the patio season
Provide an area adjacent to your patio space for a fireplace, fire pit or fire burner. Adding a source of heat will allow you to comfortably enjoy your outdoor living space during the cool days and nights in spring and fall.

Arbors and pergolas
Arbors and pergolas always create a destination and can spark interest even in a small garden. They can be inviting and offer an attractive shade area, but most important they provide support for an endlessly interesting variety of plants.
Increase sustainability through native plantings
Replace high maintenance lawn space with native plantings. Native plants are hardy and don't require constant mowing. They also require less fertilizer, less water and less weeding if planted in an appropriate location. Sustainable landscapes are a great way to increase biodiversity and improve water quality.
Proper lawn care ...
is the best defense against weeds, disease and insects. Established lawns need about 1 inch of water per week from rain or irrigation. Fertilize 3-4 times per year. Set your mowing height high and cut no more than 1/3 of the total height.
